Qassim's signature date

Sukkari's home is Qassim, where it makes up about 65% of the palms. Saudi Press Agency

The Twist

A date that twisted itself as it dried. The result? A firm, creased skin and a soft heart that tastes of honey and caramel.

Mufattal means “twisted”: Sukkari's skin shrinks as it dries on the palm and curls into fine creases that cling to the flesh, and it is graded on how clean that twist is and how golden it looks. As sweet as its name, and one date with a cup of gahwa does the job of sugar.

The details

With Royal dates: the largest fruit and the most fully twisted, for the gathering you want remembered. The Mufattal is laid in the tray date by date and sealed in clear wrap so it arrives as it was laid: take off the wrap and set it before your guests, with no plates and no arranging, and the tray is yours to keep. Three sizes: the small holds about 65 dates, the medium about 90 and the large about 150, a few fewer the bigger the dates.

The share of an adult's daily reference value, per the nutrient reference values of Gulf standard GSO 2233.

From the Sunnah

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“There is a tree among the trees which is similar to a Muslim (in goodness), and that is the date palm tree.”

    مِنَ الشَّجَرِ شَجَرَةٌ تَكُونُ مِثْلَ الْمُسْلِمِ، وَهْىَ النَّخْلَةُ
